It was the first time that Michael Thompson, Dennis Perkey, Kris Forberg and Gabe Baida set foot in Brazil. Their trip the result of a partnership between the Autoridade Brasileira de Controle de Dopagem (ABCD) and the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) was for the training of Doping Control Officials. The team from USADA brought their experience using the International Standards for Testing and Investigations established by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) to train, together with ABCD, new DCOs.
The preparation and enthusiasm they brought to the class was visible to all. "We had experts from the US to share their experiences with us. Learning with them was a fabulous experience", said Talles Sanches, a DCO candidate in the first group. The USADA team conducted a top level training program and was impressed by the quality of the participants selected by ABCD. "It´s a privilege to be here. ABCD has a truly qualified group of future DCOs. This has really been an excellent Program", commented instructor and Lead USADA DCO, Kris Forberg.
Still overtaken with Maracanã Stadium, where the simulated doping control exercises were held, and fascinated with the Brazilians, the USADA instructors said good-bye in their noticeable American accents, using the newest Portuguese word they had learned: "Obrigado" - thank you, in English.
